Research

Note that as of June 30, 2026, I am officially retired. While I hold Emeritus status, I am no longer research active. If you would like to see the outcome of more than three decades of my research based on the study of plant secondary metabolites or phytochemicals, then read on.

Throughout my career I have been interested in how plants use phytochemicals to interact with other organisms or defend themselves against environmental factors such as wounding and pathogen attack. Together with a large nuber of very talented students and postdocs, I have use a combined molecular biological/biochemical/analytical chemistry approach to address fundamental questions about phytochemistry. Overall research activities can be divided into two categories: 1) Biosynthesis and Function of Suberin, and 2) Chemical Ecology of Phytochemicals. Click on the category link to learn more.
